History
2009 to present: Outreach to Iranian community continues to be a success. Author and Ryerson university professor, Dr. Nima Naghibi, holds a conference at ILFO. She presents her book Rethinking Global Sisterhood. ILFO is granted a charity # and several proposals to HRDC, Law Foundation of Ontario and Ontario Trillium Foundation are accepted. Collaboration with Bruce Trail, Oak Ridges Trail, Rouge Park and Hike Ontario continue to be successful. ILFO is mandated to promote Canadian culture and life.
2005 to 2008: ILFO is awarded a grant from the Attorney General. Efforts in outreach to the Iranian community are started and the response has been extremely positive. Art classes (painting, drawing, etc.) and writing classes are offered at the centre. Self-confidence training sessions are also provided by a counsellor. Excellent responses received was an indication of fulfillment of the needs of the community.
2000 to 2004: In 2003, the hotline S.O.S. femmes is terminated. In April 2004, the organization adopts its new name Institut de leadership des femmes de l’Ontario (ILFO) and dedicates itself to new areas of interest. In October 2004, Victoria Arshad becomes the new Executive Director and a multi year (3 years) grant from Ontario Trillium Foundation assist organization to continue it's activities.
1995 to 2000: The research centre for women is moved to the Glendon campus of York University. Conflict Mediation courses are offered during this period of time.
1989 to 1995: Women from different communities organize and create seven regional committees of intervention for preventing violence and promoting community development. Four agencies are also created in Oshawa, Borden, Trenton and Sarnia. S.O.S. femmes becomes a 24hr hotline.
1987 to 1989: The women set up a telephone line (S.O S. femmes) providing service in French, open a research centre and provide resources for women.
1982 to 1985: A group of Toronto French-speaking women organize information sessions on violence against women. Their aim is to provide information, recruit and regroup other women throughout Southern Ontario in order to create a common front on combating violence against women. York University dedicates a scholarship award to students of women's studies in honour of founder of the organization, Lorraine Gauthier.
The Lorraine Gauthier Award
In recognition of Lorraine Gauthier's contribution to feminist scholarship in Canada and her advocacy on behalf of francophone women, the scholarship will be awarded to a worthy student in the course "Introduction aux etudes des femmes". Recipients must be Canadian Citizens or permanent residents, be Ontario residents and demonstrate financial need.
